Techlore Interview (BusKill, Interdiction, and OpSec)

We’re super happy to share that Techlore invited BusKill founder Michael Altfield onto their YouTube channel to talk about BusKill, security, and privacy

In addition to answering questions about the origin of BusKill, the interview ran a gamut of issues regarding security and privacy — including

  1. How to mitigate State-sponsored interdiction attacks,
  2. minimizing attack surfaces of mobile phones with broadband processors,
  3. the threats of AI “identity verification” systems on privacy,
  4. and much more

What is BusKill?

BusKill is a laptop kill-cord. It’s a USB cable with a magnetic breakaway that you attach to your body and connect to your computer.

If the connection between you to your computer is severed, then your device will lock, shutdown, or shred its encryption keys — thus keeping your encrypted data safe from thieves that steal your device.

Executive Summary

In 2025, we’re changing from a twice-yearly Warrant Canary to a once-yearly-canary plus a new once-yearly-annual-report.

In 2025, we published two video to help spread awareness, provide a clear demo, and show how to use BusKill.

And in 2025, we were awarded a grant from Futo.

First Annual Report

Previously we had been burying overviews of our last year’s activity in a newsletter email, which wasn’t very (publicly) transparent.

Going forward, we’ll be be publishing annual reports at the beginning of each year and renewing our Warrant Canaries in the middle of the year.

This was also mentioned in our most-recent cryptographically-signed warrant canary message, Canary #010

Video Documentation

This year we worked with video producers in the privacy/security space to help us publish open-source guides that explain how to use BusKill.

One video (by Techlore) was a short review and demo showing how to use the BusKill Kit.

The other video (by samxplogs) was an unboxing video of the BusKill Kit.
